Our Mission
To have working smoke alarms in every home. We can accomplish this through public education, FREE smoke alarm installations, and citizen participation/partnerships
Why?
Home fires claim seven lives every day, but having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half. That’s why we are partnering with the American Red Cross to install free smoke alarms, as part of The Red Cross's Sound the Alarm.
Who can sign up?
Anyone living in a private home can sign up for FREE smoke alarm installation. There are no income qualifications to receive FREE smoke alarms & installation.
We can not install alarms in rentals (rented by non-immediate family members). State and Federal Laws require landlord/property owners to provide smoke alarms according to the table below.
What happens once you submit a request.
A Fire Department member or Red Cross Volunteer will contact you to set up a date and time for installation. If you decide that you no longer need us, we can remove you from the list. If you change your mind at a later date, just submit another request.
What to expect during installation.
- There will be 2 HFD staff or ARC volunteers to install your alarms. We will walk through your home with you first to decide how many alarms you need and where to install them.
- Installation can take anywhere from 10 minutes up to 30 minutes. The time is dependant on the size of your home and the number of alarms that need to be installed.
- Before we leave, we will teach you how to keep your alarms working and ensure you know how to escape your home in 2 different ways in the event of a fire.
