- Do you provide free smoke alarms?

We have a smoke alarm installation program through the American Red Cross "Ring the Alarm" that will not only provide free smoke alarms but we will also install them in your home. Visit our Fire Department webpage to find out more or to apply for free smoke alarm installation.
- How do I request a station visit?

You can request a station visit by filling out the request a tour form on the Fire Department webpage.
- Report a leaking hydrant

Hibbing Public Utilities owns and maintains the public fire hydrants. You can report a leaking hydrant by calling the HPU main office during business hours. For after business hours call 111-111-1111.
- Do you take expired fire extinguishers?

We do not dispose of fire extinguishers or service them. You can get them recharged/serviced at a fire protection company such as LVC in Hibbing or you can dispose of them at the Hibbing Transfer Station - Household Hazardous Materials located at 3994 Landfill Road, Hibbing, MN.
- I submitted my application, now what?

Once your application is submitted, it will be forwarded for review to the hiring manager. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted for testing dates and times.
- Who can I call to check the status of my application?

- What is the CPAT?
-
This test consists of a series of physical tasks, such as climbing stairs, carrying tools or raising ladders, which closely approximates physical tasks routinely performed by firefighters on the job. Most tasks are timed. Applicants are advised to prepare for the agility test for purposes of safety as well as to enhance their chance for a higher score.
With adequate preparation, the average healthy, fit individual should be able to complete the test safely and satisfactorily. During testing, all procedures will be explained in detail and demonstrated if necessary.
CPAT screening procedures meet the following criteria:
- They are job related
- They are not discriminatory on the basis of sex, race, age, etc.
- They represent what experts feel are the most crucial phases of firefighting and emergency medical activities and are indicative of a variety of firefighting and emergency tasks
- They are quantifiable

- How Do I replace my current Lock Box?

Whether you have a DAMA Box or an old version Knox Box, you will need to follow the same instructions for purchasing a new Knox Box. If you already have a Knox Box, use your existing Knox Box customer account. If you currently have a DAMA Box, you will need to create a New Customer Account for Knox Box.
- We have had keys updated and changed, how do I update the keys in the Knox Box?

Simply call or email the Fire Marshal to set up a time to access the Knox Box and update the keys.
- What Keys are required to be in the Knox Box?

The following Keys are required if applicable to your building.
- Master exterior entrance or grand master key;
- Master interior including mechanical room, boiler room, and electrical room;
- Fire alarm panel/enunciator and pull stations;
- Sprinkler riser room
- Each key shall be placed separately on a single ring stating its use.
- I locked myself out of my building, can you use the Knox Key to let me in?

The Hibbing Fire Department will not access a key box to unlock a property for someone whom may have forgotten their keys to their building. Keys will only be accessed for emergencies, key updates, or owner approved training or inspection.
- Who has access to my Knox Box?

The Fire Department is the only Entity who has access to the Knox Box. The key we have is locked in our own lock box and is checked daily to ensure that the key is secure and present. We do not use the key system to access buildings for anything other than an emergency situation.
- How do I join the Explorer's Post?

That's okay! We do not expect firefighting to be for everyone. That is the purpose of this program, to try out a career without being committed to it financially or a length of time. If you do not want to continue you can just simply opt out by contacting one of the 3 advisors.
- Does it cost anything to join the Explorer's Program?

Yes, there is a small application fee as this is a sub group of the Boyscouts of America in which members are insured under BOA during events and trainings.
